Blepharoplasty, commonly referred to as an eyelid lift, is a procedure to rejuvenate the skin and muscles around the eyes, including both the upper and lower lids. Blepharoplasty eyelid surgery is an effective treatment for cosmetic issues such as drooping, sagging upper eyelids and for sagging and bags along the lower lids. In some extreme cases, blepharoplasty can also eliminate visual obstruction, when upper lid sagging is extreme enough to block the patient's line of sight.

Depending on your unique symptoms of aging, blepharoplasty may be as effective in reversing those signs as a facelift.

For a full facial rejuvenation procedure, blepharoplasty may be combined with other procedures such as a facelift, browlift, chin implants, or skin care procedures designed to rejuvenate the appearance.

There are two types of blepharoplasty: Upper lid blepharoplasty and lower lid blepharoplasty. These can be performed separately or together, depending on your individual needs and issues. They are often done in conjunction with brow rejuvenation.

Upper lid blepharoplasty procedure

For an upper lid blepharoplasty, the cosmetic surgeon makes a small incision along the crease of the upper eyelid to access the area. Through this incision, the surgeon is able to remove excess fat that contributes to the puffed appearance, and tightens the skin and muscle of the eyelid to eliminate drooping and sagging.

The incision is then carefully closed with fine sutures.

Lower lid blepharoplasty eyelid surgery procedure

For a lower lid blepharoplasty eyelid surgery, the surgeon may do the procedure one of two ways.

The first method for lower lid blepharoplasty is similar to the upper lid blepharoplasty described above. For this procedure, the surgeon makes a small incision just below the lash line along the lower eyelid. Through this incision, the surgeon then removes excess fatty tissue to eliminate puffiness and bagging below the eyes, tightens the skin and muscle of the lower eyelid to reverse any drooping and sagging. Once these steps are completed, the incision is carefully closed with fine sutures.

The second type of lower lid blepharoplasty, called a transconjunctival blepharoplasty, is used in cases in which the patient does not require excess skin and muscle to be trimmed. This eyelid surgery procedure involves making an incision inside the lower eyelid, so that any scarring from the procedure is invisible. Through this incision, the surgeon is able to remove excess fatty tissue that creates the appearance of puffiness or bags under the eyes. Once this is done, the surgeon closes the incision with fine sutures.
