Breast Reduction Questions

Serving Beverly Hills, Los Angeles,
Newport Beach, & Orange County, California

Will I be able to breast feed following a breast reduction?
In some cases, breast reduction surgery can interfere with your ability to breast feed in the future. Because the breast reduction procedure involves removing skin and tissue from the breast, it is possible for this to interfere with the milk ducts, inhibiting your ability to produce milk.

How long will it take to heal following surgery?
For the first few days following your breast reduction procedure, your breast surgeon may prescribe medication to lessen the swelling and discomfort in the early healing stages. Within a few weeks, you will probably be able to resume most of your normal activities, and most patients are fully healed within a few months.

Will my breasts be the same shape they were before?
During the breast reduction procedure, your surgeon reshapes and repositions the breast tissue to create an aesthetically pleasing breast shape. Discuss your goals with your surgeon during your consultation, and he or she can let you know whether your expectations for the appearance of your breasts are realistic.

Will my health insurance cover the costs of the breast reduction?
In some cases, particularly those in which the size of your breasts is causing discomfort or other physical symptoms, your insurance plan may cover the costs of the breast reduction procedure. If you have questions about your specific case, talk to a plastic surgeon with experience in breast reductions, and he or she can help you determine whether insurance will cover your procedure.

Will I have scarring following the breast reduction procedure?
Yes. You will have some amount of scarring at the site of your incisions, but those scars will follow the natural lines of the breast, and are usually not severe. The appearance and extent of scarring, however, depends in large part on unique physiological factors such as your general health, skin type, and habits such as smoking. Ask your breast surgeon for any advice on ways to minimize scarring following your procedure.
