A brow lift, sometimes called a forehead lift, is a facial plastic surgery procedure that smoothes out the muscles of the forehead, minimizing or eliminating the furrows and wrinkles that can contribute to an aged appearance.
As a facial rejuvenating procedure, the brow lift is often ideal for patients who have experienced significant wrinkling and drooping in the forehead area.
In addition to smoothing the forehead, a brow lift also has the effect of raising the eyebrows, giving the eye area a more alert, youthful appearance. For this reason, many patients who feel they need a blepharoplasty (eyelid lift) find that a brow lift is a better solution for them.
The brow lift procedure
A brow lift can be performed using one of two techniques: as open surgery, in which the cosmetic surgeon works directly on the area, or as endoscopic surgery, in which the surgeon uses an endoscope, a device that lets the surgeon access the area remotely, through a small incision.
For an open brow lift procedure, your surgeon will make an incision well behind the hairline, around the top of the head, exposing the muscles of the forehead. The surgeon will then remove excess tissue, smooth the muscles, and excise excess skin, leaving the forehead smooth and taut.
For an endoscopic brow lift procedure, rather than making one long incision, the surgeon will make several small incisions, also behind the hairline, as in the open procedure. Through these small incisions, the surgeon uses an endoscope, which is a thin device, about the size of a pencil, with a tiny camera attached. This device lets the surgeon work on the area remotely, again removing excess tissue and smoothing the muscles of the forehead to eliminate or minimize wrinkling and furrows.
