Medical Chemical Skin Peels can address a variety of problems including the following:

Fine lines and wrinkles around the forehead, eyes, cheek, and mouth

  • Acne scarring
  • Age spots
  • Sun damage
  • Pre-cancerous skin growths

The type and strength of the specific chemical peel procedure you choose should depend on the specific skin problems you are experiencing, the results you hope to achieve, and several other factors. The risks and benefits of the various chemical peel formulations may vary depending on individual factors such as your skin type, genetics, and your overall health and healing abilities.

With the variety of options available, it is helpful to consult with a professional when deciding what procedure is right for you. To schedule an appointment, call or email our plastic surgeons today, and we'll help you navigate the options and select a customized chemical skin peel just for you.

Types of chemical peels

There are a variety of formulations your cosmetic surgeon might use for chemical peels, in different concentrations, depending on the problems the peel is designed to treat and the results you hope to achieve.

Some of the most commonly used types of chemical peel are Phenol , Alphahydroxy Acids (AHAs) , and Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) .

Phenol . Phenol is the strongest chemical used for facial peels today. Phenol produces a 'deep peel,' meaning that several layers of skin are removed. A phenol peel is capable of eliminating even severe skin problems such as wrinkling, precancerous growths, and sun damage. Phenol peels do carry some risk that they can damage the pigmentation of the skin, however, so it is important to discuss this procedure in detail with an experienced cosmetic surgeon who can assess your skin to determine whether damage is likely.

Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA). Trichloroacetic acid is a common formulation for medium depth peels. While the results are not as extreme as with a phenol peel, a trichloroacetic peel can eliminate fine wrinkling, superficial blemishes, and irregular pigmentation issues without the risks of a deep peel. In some cases, more dramatic results can be achieved by repeating the trichloroacetic peel.

Alphahydroxy Acids (AHAs). The mildest chemical formulations for facial peels are those using Alphahydroxy Acids, or AHAs. Alphahydroxy acids can be used to effectively treat dryness, uneven pigmentation, very fine wrinkling, and acne. Because the formulation is mild, your cosmetic surgeon may prescribe an AHA formulation to be applied regularly at home, to achieve gradual results over a period of time.
