Chin implants are sturdy silicone based prosthetics that can fill out and strengthen the natural jaw line, eliminating the appearance of a weak chin, and bringing the rest of the facial features into proportion.
The first step in a chin implant procedure is finding the right size and shape implant to best enhance your appearance. At this stage, the guidance of a skilled and experienced cosmetic surgeon is invaluable.
The chin implant is usually constructed of a solid form of silicone, with a gel-like consistency. This type of implant is firm enough to hold its form, and flexible enough to look and feel natural when implanted under the skin.
In addition to being used to strengthen naturally weak features, chin and other facial implants are frequently used in conjunction with other procedures, such as the facelift or rhinoplasty, to recreate fullness and more youthful proportions in the face.
The chin implant procedure
For the facial plastic surgery procedure itself, the surgeon makes a small incision either inside the mouth, along the lower lip, or on the outside, along the jaw line itself. The exact position of the incision will depend on your unique facial structure, the size and shape of the implant, and other factors. Your surgeon may adapt the incision shape and site in order to camouflage any potential scarring.
Once the incision is made, your plastic surgeon will separate the tissue to create a pocket for the implant. The implant is then carefully put into place and positioned between the skin and the bone of the jaw, and the incision is sewn up. The procedure usually takes between half an hour and an hour.
