Deviated Septum and Rhinoplasty
Serving Los Angeles, Manhattan Beach, & Palos Verdes, California
The septum is the divider that separates your nose into two compartments. It is made of cartilage and is covered on both sides with the mucous membrane.
If your septum is not straight, it is considered deviated. One visible sign is asymmetry of the nose and the nostrils. Correcting a deviated septum is key to having clear nasal passages.
Deviation is typically caused by some trauma to the nose. The damage can be mild, moderate, or severe. In severe deviation, the edge of a deviated septum may even be visible thorough one side of the nostril. To correct the problem, a surgeon is needed to reshape the bent cartilage into a straighter alignment.
Correcting Deviated Septums with Rhinoplasty
A deviated septum can cause complications in breathing as well as sleep. Deviated septums can lead to health and nasal problems, including chronic nasal infections or increased frequency of sinus infections. In some cases septoplasty will be covered by insurance if it is deemed necessary for improved breathing.
The most common method for correcting deviated septums is the septoplasty procedure. This is also called deviated septum surgery and is quite safe. This is done through the nose, without incisions on the outside; unless rhinoplasty is also taking place. It is very common for people with a deviated septum also choose to have rhinoplasty, during the same surgery.
Surgically correcting a deviated septum can be an outpatient procedure completed in just a few hours. If the surgery is combined with rhinoplasty, you will recover in our state of the art surgical center and leave when you are ready.
