Gynecomastia is excessive development of the breasts in males. Gynecomastia can develop during or after adolescence, and is estimated to affect 40 to 60% of men.
Fortunately, there are procedures available to reduce or eliminate the appearance of gynecomastia.
Male breasts may consist of glandular tissue, fatty tissue, or both, and each male breast reduction procedure will vary depending on the type of tissue involved.
If the breasts consist primarily of glandular tissue, the male breast reduction surgeon will make a small incision either around the areola (the darkened area of skin surrounding the nipples) or under the arm. Through this incision, the plastic surgeon will remove the tissue using a scalpel.
If the breasts consist primarily of fatty tissue, the surgeon will make a similar incision, either around the areola or under the arm, and then use a liposuction procedure, moving a cannula - a thin, flexible metal tube - to break up and suction out the excess fat.
In cases in which there are significant amounts of both glandular and fatty tissue, your breast reduction surgeon may combine these two procedures to achieve optimal results.
In cases in which an unusually large amount of tissue is removed, the surgeon may complete the male breast reduction surgery by excising excess skin so the skin lays taut over the newly sculpted chest.
