What product has the biggest “Wow” factor in facial injectable materials today? As it turns out it’s Radiesse, a product that has been used successfully to fill wrinkles for about five years. The big news for patients is not so much the product itself but an exciting new application. Radiesse can now be used to create facial volume utilizing new injection techniques, plastic surgeons are now using Radiesse as a volume filler in the cheeks and chin areas. Doctors must be specially trained to perform this delicate procedure which involves layering of Radiesse in the depressed area. The procedure results in a plumping up of the area in the cheek and below the eye, but not in the orbit of the eye. As we age we tend to loose the fat in our faces. Those fat pads give us a more youthful appearance and the loss of facial volume leads to a hollow look in the cheek area. In the past, permanent silicone cheeks implants were a solution to this problem. Unfortunately, these proved to be problematic. The implants tended to shift over time, or worse, they appeared as apples in shape as the patient’s skin and facial fat changed with age. Another solution was fat injections. However fat had to be harvested from other parts of the body requiring extensive surgery.
Radiesse to the rescue. Radiesse is a calcium based product that has been used for years as a wrinkle filler. Now, however, with advanced injection techniques we are able to augment the cheek area and the chin area with long lasting Radiesse. The treatments take about fifteen minutes. They are performed in an outpatient setting and the results are instantaneous. A dental block is used to minimize discomfort. One or two syringes are used in each cheek depending on the patient. Some bruising can occur but it is transient. Patients should seek out a cosmetic surgeon who is trained and has the skill to achieve maximum fill but natural looking results. The goal is a fuller cheek which patients love.
