Rhinoplasty in Hispanic population involves many different techniques. Hispanic nasal characteristics are diverse and have been described in the medical literature. The described variations in the literature include the Castilian nose and the mestizo nose.
The Castilian nose has a high nasal dorsum and a normal nasal tip. The mestizo nose involves a broad-based thick skin and a wide tip. Many Hispanic patients do not fall into either of these categories but are some blend of characteristics. Due to the diversity of nasal characteristics in the Hispanic population, it is essential that a detailed nasal analysis be performed before Hispanic rhinoplasty surgery.
In the case of the Castilian type nose, the treatment consists of a dorsal hump reduction with refinement of the nasal tip. The mestizo nose generally does not require dorsal hump reduction. Instead the mestizo nose requires techniques to improve the shape and projection of the nasal tip. These techniques include suturing procedures and cartilage grafts of the nasal tip. The mestizo nose may also benefit from reduction of the size of the nostrils by excision of the excess nostril skin.
Many patients will have nasal deformities that are different from those above. The techniques used to correct these problems will be discussed with the patient at the time of their complimentary consultation at Bray Plastic Surgery.
