Laser therapy is an effective tool for treating unsightly and even painful spider veins.
Spider veins are clusters of red, purple, or blue veins that commonly appear on the ankles, calves, thighs, and face. Spider veins can occur at any time, and can affect anyone, but they are most commonly reported in women between the ages of 30 and 60. Some estimates say that over half of adult women suffer from spider veins.
Contrary to some popular beliefs, spider veins are not broken, but are veins that have become dilated or stretched over time. While spider veins are still connected to the venous system, they can be eliminated without any negative health effects.
One of the most popular, painless, and noninvasive techniques for treating spider veins is through laser therapy. Laser spider vein treatment involves targeting a beam of laser light at the area to be treated. The light is absorbed by the blood inside the vein, causing it to become heated and disintegrate. Over a short period following the treatment, the targeted veins disappear as they are reabsorbed into the system.
An alternative to laser resurfacing is sclerotherapy. In this rather simple procedure, veins are injected with a sclerosing solution, which causes them to collapse and fade from view. The vein treatment procedure may also remedy the bothersome symptoms associated with spider veins, including aching, burning, swelling and night cramps. Usually two visits are required to achieve optimal results.
